Just four British makes have won Le Mans. Jaguar seven times, Bentley six times, Aston Martin once, in 1959, and Lagonda, in 1935 with a M45R Rapide, the competition version of the car we are offering here. The M45 was undoubtedly one of the highest pedigree cars money could buy in the mid-1930s, offering 90 mph performance in standard trim. Furthermore, our research has revealed that this example is a bit special. It is one of three chassis built specifically for export to Australia and were built on what have been described as 10’9" Rapide chassis. Other Rapide features include the radiator shell, which is wider at the top than at the bottom, headlamp support system and the streamlined radiator filler cap.
As was usual for the period, the car was imported in chassis form for local coachbuilders to build the body. Martin and King of High St Armadale were then Melbourne’s leading coachbuilder and erected a sports saloon that closely resembled the "works" Rapide saloon, except that it was not pillarless, a concession no doubt to our roads. Somewhat remarkably, this original body is still fitted, complete with the original interior. It is many years however since the car has been registered and a thorough re-commissioning is going to be necessary. It does however start "on the button" and drive, exuding an air of superiority that its first owner no doubt relished. In fact, we have the first owner’s details as an original registration certificate has survived with the car. An original instruction book is also included as well as a copy of Mr Arnold Dave’s excellent book on the model.
Such a unique car comes to the market very rarely. There’s a lot of work to unlock its potential and there will no doubt be interest, particularly from overseas, in acquiring the car to build a replica Rapide tourer. These can sell for huge money and undoubtedly make our car difficult to price. We hope it finds a good home, wherever that turns out to be.
