Australian-delivered, long boot manual Silver Dawn. One of only two.
The Silver Dawn was a significant new model for Rolls-Royce as the first to be sold by them with their own bodywork. All previous Rolls-Royce cars were bodied by external coachbuilders but that was becoming increasingly impractical as the car industry modernised after World War II. Originally built solely for export and aimed at the owner driver, the Silver Dawn proved to be a very popular model in Australia. Updated in 1952 with a notably larger boot, most enthusiasts prefer the styling of these later cars as being better balanced. The other change around this time was the introduction of the automatic transmission, so this car has the near unique combination of the better appearance while retaining the pleasures of a traditional Rolls-Royce right-hand floor change.
Supplied by Kellow-Falkiner to their very good customer, Coles, whose grocery business needs no introduction, our car was specified in Tudor Grey with Red hide, a colour scheme it still retains. It was subsequently traded by Mr Coles on a new Silver Cloud in 1956 and was then sold to South Australia, where it has had just four owners in seventy years. This is documented in a comprehensive history file supplied with the car and includes receipts for extensive maintenance and restoration work over the car’s life. In particular, its reupholstering by a highly-regarded trimmer in South Australia is a delight. The car is driving beautifully and must be one of the best in the country.
Offered with its original handbook, service instructions, large tools and a near complete tray of small tools. A Victorian RWC will be supplied to local buyers on sale.
