Since 2005, Flying Spur has been the name of the four-door sedan in Bentley’s model range but this was not the first time the name had been employed. In 1957, Mulliner, the famous London coach builder, offered a four-door body style, Design No 7443, on the Bentley Continental chassis, previously reserved for two-door cars. They named this body the Flying Spur, and the name was sufficiently evocative that Bentley thought it was worth recycling some fifty years later. Whereas the later model has been built in comparatively large numbers, the original was very exclusive, a mere 73 Series 1 cars being built with 53 of those being built in right-hand drive. S2 and S3 versions followed and they are all now some of the most collectable Bentleys ever made.
Our car is the only example sold new to Australia. It’s first owner was the fabulously wealthy Sir Tom Barr-Smith of Adelaide, Sir Tom replaced it with an S2 Flying Spur in 1961, as you do, and replaced that car in turn with an S3 Flying Spur in 1965. All three were finished in the same Ivory colour. Ours however is the only one that hasn’t since been sold overseas. It remained in Adelaide with three later owners for over sixty years before moving east and is very well-known in Rolls-Royce Owners Club circles.
Still in exceptionally original condition, the next owner can choose whether to go down the route of preservation or cosmetic restoration. It is remarkably corrosion-free and unmolested and still has its original owners handbook, tools and ignition key. Fitted from new with Sundym glass and more recently with air-conditioning.
Do we need to mention that the opportunity to acquire this unique car may not come around again for some time? The sole Australian-delivered example of the 53 RHD Series 1 Flying Spurs ever built.
